Knowing the nutritional value of the hay you're feeding is the first step in deciding on how much, if any supplemental feed your horse needs. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will test hay samples for $10. This can be a wise investment to prevent overfeeding. Your Extension Agent can assist you with sampling hay and submitting samples to the lab.
